I've replied to Andy's post OpenLDAP syncronisation Challenge and his answer is MirrorMode (scroll to bottom of that page, as I've since fixed the internal links ).

Here's what an enterprise setup would look like for Active-Active Hot Standby:

Quite a few interesting articles and blog posts today.

Whenever I see a few good ones, I'll do one of these roundup posts.

• The Linux Networking Cookbook is out, which includes a section on OpenLDAP.


• Andy writes about his OpenLDAP Replication Design thoughts; I'll comment on this later.


• Someone really likes GOsa, which is a very good LDAP^[?] web admin tool. We like it too.


• Peter Judge doesn't seem to understand the difference between a Directory Server and Active Directory. We blogged about this common mistake yesterday.


• Our partners Symas, keep us updated on the unfortunate resignation of Neil Wilson in his An Open Letter to the OpenDS Community and to Sun Microsystems post. We share the same thoughts as the comments in the post, but I'll add that some companies just don't understand how FLOSS^[?] works or how a community works.


• Carla Schroder has started a 3 part series on Building an LDAP Server on Linux. There are a few errors we will help her with.

I wish people would do some research on OpenLDAP before making such silly comments, take for example It's the Directory, Stupid:

Right now, the open-source directory server options boil down to Red Hat/Fedora Directory Server, and OpenLDAP, neither of which are positioned to challenge Active Directory.

Depends on what the challenge is, I don't see any....

Then there's OpenLDAP, which some question on scalability grounds, and most coil away from for its rough edges and its lack of anything approaching AD^[?]-like integration with Linux distributions.

Yes, maybe using outdated vendor shipped versions, not when using the source or enterprise versions.

I thought it would be very handy (at least to Suretec) to have Amanda config held in an OpenLDAP Directory, so I raised this question.

Imagine all the Amanda clients pulling in config data from one source. Nice.

Seems the answer is not yet. Oh well.

For some reason an i386 upgrade via DVD is busted.

Work arounds seem to be upgrading by YUM either by pointing to the DVD or online repos.

Yes it is. Very fast.

Writing this on F8 x86_64, whilst one of our laptops is being upgraded from Fedora 7 to Fedora 8 via yum

Well, Fedora 8 was released on Friday. There a some great new features.

Suretec uses it on it's desktops and laptops, so all of us will be upgrading sometime this week.

A nice minireview has been done, as well as many other full reviews.

Looks good. Any gotchas I'll post here.

Just a quick note to say that the OpenLDAP Weekly News will be out tomorrow night.

Maybe our docs were in too bad a state before, but since all the re-working for the 2.4 admin, people are actually reading it and sending in patches!
