Original Announcement

Things to note:

'amverify' and 'amverifyrun' are deprecated and replaced with the new, more flexible 'amcheckdump'

'amdd' and 'ammt' are deprecated.

New 'amcryptsimple', 'amgpgcrypt' - encryption plugins based on gpg.

New 'amserverconfig', 'amaddclient' - Initial Amanda configuration tools these tools make assumptions, please see man page.

glib is required to compile and run amanda.

Almost 200 unit tests are available via 'make installcheck'.

There's more at the above link, but that's a lot of work done since the last beta.

Well done to all the Amanda Team!

The Amanda 2.6.0 beta release offers some excellent new features. Ones that appeal to Suretec are:

A Perl Interface

Encryption methods (various techniques have been available previously) - Simple and GPG

There of course many other excellent additions and fixes.

So, why is the Perl Interface so cool? Well, a while ago we asked about using the Perl interface for use with an LDAP[?] Configuration Backend, but at that time Amanda wasn't ready.

The Perl interface is a great addition and easy to understand why it was needed.

We'll keep you updated on how the betas progress and when we start hacking up an LDAP interface

Binaries and source can be downloaded from Zmanda.

I thought it would be very handy (at least to Suretec) to have Amanda config held in an OpenLDAP Directory, so I raised this question.

Imagine all the Amanda clients pulling in config data from one source. Nice.

Seems the answer is not yet. Oh well.

I'm thinking of getting more articles out there. Either on the Suretec site, or a community site like Symas did with their OpenLDAP article. Ideas include:

Asterisk Realtime with OpenLDAP

Configure OpenLDAP over LDAP[?]

Working with Firewalls and OpenLDAP Replication

OpenLDAP 2.4 - Best of breed LDAP

Browsing your OpenLDAP directory with Catalyst and Dojo

The real power of OpenLDAP: Overlays and Backends

One Place to Rule them All: OpenLDAP with Jabber, VoIP, SCM, Samba.....

Securing OpenLDAP

Enterprise OpenLDAP Deployments

OpenLDAP with a PostgreSQL Backend

How big can your Directory get?

Program your OpenLDAP Directory with Perl

LDAP Schema Design

OpenLDAP Fundamentals

OpenLDAP ACLs

I can think of many more, but I have the normal project docs to finish
