I was intrigued searching the other day to see if there was an "LDAP
[?] Appliance". The only result worth noting was a product that has been stopped:
LDAP One Network Identity Appliance
Was the wrong Directory server technology used or was it packaged wrongly etc.? Either way it obviously didn't sell.
I'm interested to learn if there is a demand for something like this using
OpenLDAP which bundled tools and capabilities like:
- Web GUI for monitoring, configuration etc.
- Desktop Client for the same as above
- Easy recovery and clustering
- Various appliances with certified directory sizes and performance
- Support plans etc.
- Specific usage targets, i.e. Identity, Samba or generic enough to do all
Generally taking the pain out of OpenLDAP management and sysadmin tasks for unexperienced users.
Suretec and
Symas always get asked the same questions about how to monitor OpenLDAP and what configuration tools to use.
Of course there are various answers to these (command line tools come with OpenLDAP anyway) and 9 times out of 10 the customer whats to integrate it with their own systems and use or write custom tools anyway.
Would it be good to have recommended tools and an appliance or is it better to let the customer do it themselves on their own hardware?
Gavin.
